Jake and Erica Jaggears teamed up with Winemaker Trent Moffett from Moffett Vineyards to create a wine collection called Ternary.
Ternary refers to a mathematical term meaning "from a base of three", which is significant to the Jaggears as they have three boys, three dogs, three angel babies, and three people are involved in making the wine.
The Jaggears' first wine is a Chardonnay blend of three different clones from the Chehalem Mountains AVA in Willamette Valley, Oregon. They plan to expand the collection to include an Oregon Pinot Noir and an Oregon Rosé, and to eventually open their own winery in Oregon.
Objective:
PAVO was approached by the Jaggears to create a logo for Ternary. Their goal was to have a logo that communicated their connection to the number three, while also conveying a sense of elegance and refinement.
Challenge:
We conducted research on the concept of "ternary" and explored various ways to represent the number three. However, the Jaggears requested that the design not have any overtly mathematical elements and instead preferred a more subtle and refined approach.
PAVO presented several design concepts to the Jaggears and received feedback before they ultimately chose a design that featured a mandala with 6 open points. The top 3 points represented the two Jaggears and their winemaker, and the bottom 3 points represented the three varietals they planned to produce.

Wine Labels

The logotype of the Ternary name was written in a sophisticated font, with the capital "T" serving as the monogram for various uses, such as the top of the wine cork.

Outcome:
The outcome of the logo is a polished design that effectively, and subtly conveys the concept of "Ternary" and the Jaggears' affinity for the number three. The logo's subtle yet impactful elements make it a versatile option that can be used on various products, such as the wine bottle labels and corks, to wine glasses, and on promotional materials such as apparel. It provides a strong base for their future brand development, as they expand their collection and establish their winery in Oregon.
